Ceiling fans can be great additions to your home, but are very hard to wire if you don’t know what you’re doing. When wiring your ceiling fan with light, there are many important things to consider in order to safely power on your fan and make sure that it works safely and correctly. Thankfully, we have provided an easy-to-follow guide on how to properly wire a ceiling fan with light so that you can easily complete this task and enjoy the benefits of having more airflow in your home.
Fix the ceiling fan
Fixing the ceiling fan was simple enough. We unscrewed the light fixture and detached it from the power source. After that, we swapped out the old light kit for a new one, making sure to use hooks that are rated for outdoor use (to protect from water damage). Lastly, we screwed the light fixture back on in place of the old one.
Remove or disconnect the light
Before you start, determine where you want the lights and switch on the ceiling fan. Take down the light fixture and remove it from the box (and put it somewhere safe). Find two white wires at either end of the string of lights. Connect one wire on one side of the string to the corresponding wire on the other side of the string. These are your pigtail connections for connecting wires in an electrical box.
Connect the black wire
Insert the black wire from the fan kit into the hole in the ceiling light fixture. Using a wire nut, attach it to any wire coming from the outlet and then insert any other black wires together. The best practice is to twist all of these wires together and seal them in place with a wire nut.
Connect the white wire
It's really easy to wire a ceiling fan. The best part about
this wiring project is that the wires should be labeled for what they are, so
all you have to do is make sure the connections match up. There should be one
white wire for the light, one red wire for the power and one black wire for the
grounding cord.
Connect these three wires by either stripping or cutting off ends of each and twisting together until tight enough.
Connect the ground wire
You have two options when it comes to connecting the ground wire. One is to connect the ground wire from the ceiling fan to the grounding screw in your outlet box and the other is, if you don't have a grounding screw in your outlet box, is you connect the ground wire to an unpainted surface of metal on your electrical panel.
Screw in the ceiling fan light kit wires
If you're installing a new ceiling fan with light, you'll
need ceiling fan light wiring diagram
some additional wiring. The easiest way is to simply screw in the new
wires and attach them to the already existing wires. To do this, find the wire
that goes up from the light fixture box (most likely black) and pull on it
until there's some slack left in it. Once you have enough slack, bring the new
wire down and wrap it around one of the screws next to where your ceiling fan
will be mounted.
